Jonah and the Great Fish

The prophet Jonah receives a divine command to preach against the city of Nineveh. Instead, he disobeys and attempts to flee by ship to Tarshish. The Lord sends a great storm, endangering the ship and its crew. Through casting lots, Jonah is revealed as the cause of the tempest. He confesses his identity and his flight from God. At his instruction, the sailors reluctantly throw him into the sea, which immediately calms. The sailors then fear the Lord and offer sacrifices. The Lord appoints a great fish to swallow Jonah, saving him from the sea.
