Elijah Calls Fire on Mount Carmel
1 Kings 18
During a severe drought in Israel, the prophet Elijah confronts King Ahab and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenges them to a contest to prove whose God is real: the God who answers by fire. After Baal's prophets fail to summon fire, Elijah prepares an altar, drenches it with water, and calls upon the Lord. God sends fire from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, wood, stones, dust, and water. The people acknowledge the Lord as God, and Elijah commands the execution of Baal's prophets. Soon after, God sends abundant rain, ending the drought.
